Men's Style Tips #7: Staples with Style, by Gareth Scourfield
This week celebrity stylist Gareth Scourfield voices snippets of wisdom on some timely staples, from the right style of watch to men’s accessories.
1.The right watch?
Gareth says:
The guidelines around when to wear certain watches are definitely blurring. However, don’t overthink it.
Suit & Sporty?
Generally, a classic slim case on a leather strap tends to work best with more formal wear.
However sportier editions can look good with tailored items.
Simple and slim is safest.
Vintage & Casual?
Conversely when dressing casually, try a classic vintage watch in place of sporty.
It can look great, even with a simple t-shirt and denim
2.Shoe ‘pointers’
Gareth says:
There’s lots of choice out there, but here are a few simple rules I live by:
– Avoid pointed or straight edge toes. Instead stick to classic, more rounded shapes
– Invest in good leather. They’ll last longer and be more comfortable
Tip: Before you buy, think about what’s in your wardrobe. Consider what you will wear them with first.
3.Socks…
Gareth says:
Good socks are certainly a style staple.
I prefer classic rib, block colours with patterned or checked trousers.
Sock patterns I tend to style with plain trousers, chino’s or denim.
I also treat socks like the rest of my wardrobe, which works in seasons.
Spring / Summer:
Brighter, block colours
It’s an obvious one, but more lightweight or ‘year round’ socks for best comfort.
Autumn/ Winter:
Depends more on my mood and the rest of my outfit.
Patterns or colours can vary, but comfort and warmth also play a part.
Ask the stylist. . .
Your questions, answered.
Maddy W. from Cornwall asks:
What’s the best style advice you have ever received?
Gareth says:
Great question. I’d say firstly Gary Oldman, who said men should dress their age. Also to dress for the job you want, not the job you have – Jeremy Langmead at Mr Porter.
