Founders' Journal: Why David Gandy Invested in LSC
Just how did two young(ish) Scottish sock entrepreneurs, manage to get the investment and support of David Gandy, the most recognised male model in the world? Well, like many good things, it all started with a drink… read on to learn more.
Firstly, who is David Gandy?
When it comes to men’s fashion, few individuals deserve the title of 'icon' more than David Gandy. Renowned for his classic British elegance and gentlemanly style, he’s become a true fashion staple and a symbol of timeless masculinity.
Surprisingly, Gandy’s journey into modeling wasn’t part of his plan. It all began when he won a TV competition while studying at university, a twist of fate that propelled him into the spotlight. From there, he quickly rose to fame, becoming the face of Dolce & Gabbana’s iconic Light Blue fragrance campaign. Although his entrance into the fashion world was serendipitous, his enduring success is the result of hard work, dedication, and a keen business sense. Coming from an entrepreneurial family, it’s no wonder Gandy has turned his career into a global success story.
How We Wooed David Gandy
Given his success in business, his personal style – and of course his experience of the men’s fashion industry – it’s fair to say David Gandy makes the perfect investor and brand ambassador for us here at London Sock Company. Our introduction to him came thanks to friend and men's stylist Joe Ottaway, who we met in the renowned luxury department store, Selfridges. “When we first showed Joe our socks, he loved them and suggested introducing us to a few people,” recalls Ryan. One of those people was David Gandy.
The Burgundy Socks That Started It All
We started by sending Gandy a pair of our Simply Sartorials in burgundy, which Joe informed us he loved. We followed this up with a thank-you whisky and sock subscription gift card, which he activated right away. Encouraged by his enthusiasm, we reached out for feedback. His response? He loved the brand and thought we were onto something. We knew we needed to do more to stand out! When Joe mentioned Gandy’s upcoming birthday, we saw an opportunity to make a lasting impression.
A Cocktail, a Couch, and a Connection
Determined to make the birthday gift personal, we enlisted the help of a mixologist friend to create a bespoke cocktail for Gandy, inspired by his love for an Old Fashioned. We framed the recipe, packaged it with socks and a handwritten note, and delivered it to his agency. Among a mountain of gifts, it could have easily been overlooked – but it wasn’t!
The very next day, Gandy emailed to express his gratitude and suggested meeting for a drink. What started as a casual evening at The Donovan Bar turned into a late-night bonding session, complete with omelette-making in his kitchen – and Dave crashing on his couch.
The Power of Creativity and Authenticity
When we reflects on the experience, it shows the importance of creativity and authenticity. “You’ve got to be a bit personal and thoughtful to stand out,” Ryan says. “If you treat someone like a celebrity, they’ll treat you like a fan. It’s all about balance.” Gandy appreciated our genuine interest in his story, not just his status.
The relationship evolved naturally from there. Gandy’s business acumen, logical approach, and shared values made him the perfect investor. “We didn’t approach him expecting an immediate investment. It’s just as important that we buy into him as much as he buys into us,” says Ryan. Their partnership, built on trust, friendship, and the occasional night out, became a cornerstone of London Sock Company’s growth.
A Legacy of Style
David Gandy’s involvement with London Sock Company is more than a celebrity endorsement. It’s a story of mutual respect, shared vision, and a reminder that great things can come from a little creativity, a lot of determination, and maybe even a framed cocktail recipe.
Today, London Sock Company continues to embody the values that caught Gandy’s attention: timeless style, quality craftsmanship, and a commitment to doing things differently. And it all started with a burgundy sock and a touch of ingenuity. Above all else, he’s become a great mentor and friend to both of us, as well as to our families and LSC team members.
