Share some joy this Eid - London Sock Company

Share some joy this Eid

For Muslims across the world, July 5th marks the end of Ramadan. It’s a time for celebration and sharing gifts – and everyone is invited to join in.

London made history in May by electing its first Muslim mayor. The son of Pakistani immigrants, Sadiq Khan ushers in a thoroughly modern age of politics in a city that has long been proud of its multiculturalism and progressive approach.

One of Khan’s earliest challenges in office was shared by a billion other people worldwide. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and, for Muslims, the holiest time of year. It is a time of self-reflection, charity and, most famously, fasting – a feat undertaken in order to symbolically share the suffering of others less fortunate around the world.

For the Mayor, the burden of balancing his newly assumed duties at City Hall was made even more challenging by his abstention from food and water – not to mention his beloved coffee – from dawn until dusk. During his first Ramadan in his new role, he used his position to strengthen bridges between communities by hosting fast-breaking meals known as iftar across the capital.

“A time of self-reflection, charity and, most famously, fasting – a feat undertaken in order to symbolically share the suffering of others less fortunate around the world.”

July 5th heralds the arrival of Eid – the celebration that marks the end of Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr, to give it its full name, is akin to Christmas in its present-buying tradition – sweets, cakes, money and clothes are all joyously exchanged among friends and family.

The spirit of gift-giving – aka philanthropy – is universal. At London Sock Company, it’s an integral part of our business. Putting on socks is something many of us do every morning, and we launched the ‘Pull Your Socks Up’ campaign as a simple reminder to do a good deed every day, no matter how small.

“Whether you’re planning to join in the end-of-Ramadan celebrations or would simply like to put a smile on a friend’s face, sharing the love has never been easier.”

In the spirit of Eid, we will be donating 10% from every sale of a luxury gift box (from today until midnight on Friday 8th July) to The House of St Barnabas – a charity that helps homeless people back into full-time employment. So, whether you’re planning to join in the end-of-Ramadan celebrations or would simply like to put a smile on a friend’s face, sharing the love has never been easier.
