Because David Gandy Knows Best
David Gandy has mastered the art of effortless style – whether on the runway or walking through Richmond Park. A long-time friend and investor of London Sock Company he is also the founder of clothing brand, Wellwear. To celebrate the launch of our London Sock Company x Wellwear collaboration this season, he joins us to share his philosophy on comfort, confidence and timeless details.
How would you describe your personal style in three words?
Traditional, contemporary, tailored.
What’s your philosophy when it comes to getting dressed in the morning?
Well, my morning consists of an early dog walk and then the school run, so everything is utilitarian, based around functionality, rather than style.
How does the new Wellwear x London Sock Company collab reflect your approach to style and comfort?
Both brands share the same philosophy – style, quality and comfort. At Wellwear we always say clothes shouldn’t just look good, they should make you feel good too. This sock collection does exactly that.

Do you have a go-to autumn essential – a piece you reach for every year?
Adding to my autumn/winter wardrobe excites me far more than spring/summer. Statement jackets and overcoats are my staple pieces for this season.
What colours do you get excited about for AW styling?
I go for more textures, prints and checks, all based around traditional tailoring rather than bold colours. My wardrobe has always been more muted colours. I have worn more greens than I ever used to though, but that's about as adventurous as it gets.
What role do socks play in your wardrobe? What colour is your favourite?
Since becoming involved with London Sock Company, socks have played a much more important role in my outfits. Before, my socks were just plain black or navy. Even though those colours are still worn a lot, I have a lot more fun now incorporating the Ottaway Style checks or the Jermyn St. Houndstooth into my wardrobe. This summer I've loved the Pastel Pattern collection, but my favourite going into autumn/winter are the Simply Sartorials in shades like Hazelnut, Peanut and Cotswold Stone. Unlike many people I love browns and tans – this is what I wear the most.
What’s a timeless style rule you always follow – or always break?
'Never wear brown in town'. Rubbish! Brown is incorporated into virtually every outfit I have.
How do you approach well-being in your day-to-day life?
Wellbeing plays a major part in my everyday life, from eating well, to training and exercise. My day always starts with a three mile walk with my dog in Richmond Park, and the only cardio I do (people don't often believe me) is walking. It’s such an underutilised form of exercise. Just make sure you are wearing the right socks!
What’s one small thing you do each day that sets a positive tone?
In London we have this weird tendency to not really smile, or talk or acknowledge other people. It’s amazing how smiling or saying ‘good morning’ to someone can set a positive tone, not only to you but to the other person. Every morning I bump into the other walkers and dog owners in Richmond Park and we always say ‘hello’. We don’t even know each other's name, but it just sets a more positive, brighter start to the day.
