Men’s Style Tips: How to wear pastels

Truth be told, when May hits, it only takes a couple sunny days in a row for us to declare that it’s basically summer – we start ditching the layers and start embracing the season’s wardrobe. Summer is the time to try something new, to go bright and to have fun. With this in mind, we’ve added two new colours in our Pastel Simply Sartorial Ribbed range – a soft Lavender and bright Coral and it’s time to welcome these popping pastels into your life. Not sure where to start, though? Here’s the London Sock Company’s style guide to effortlessly introducing these new hues into your every day looks.

Start small

A key thing with pastel colours is subtly. If you are wearing one item of clothing in a pastel palette, it’s probably enough. You want to avoid any Easter egg vibes. Accessories and small touches – such as socks – are a great way to introduce a little pastel into your look for maximum impact without much effort.

Dress tonally

If you are feeling confident and you want to branch out, it’s important not wear too many pastel shades at the same time. Dressing tonally (i.e. wearing colours that fall within the same ‘family’) will ensure that the different pieces in your outfit complement each other. A soft pink shirt, for example, will look great with a pair of our Coral Socks. Since they are in the same tonal family, they make a flattering combo.

Pay attention to fabrics

When it comes to pastels, materials such as cotton and linen are the most flattering. In part, this is due to the inherent nature of these fabrics – which sit well on and suit most people but also the lighter materials lend themselves well to the pastel colour palette. A bright coral pink silk shirt is much harder to pull off than its cotton counterpart (also, unless you are staring as the Lothario in a foreign soap opear, pastel silk shirts are probably a hard no). And breathable cottons and linens in light pastel shades are crucially wonderful and cool for warmer weather.

Incorporate some pattern

A subtle print or pattern is another great way to add some pastel colours as well as a bit of flair into your wardrobe, especially through the medium of socks. Wondering if you can go for pastel florals? The answer is a resounding yes. The Spring Floral Collection from Ilaria Urbinati x London Sock Company is a trio of pastel colours that incorporate a subtle floral design for maximum impact. Wear these with a white linen shirt and blue jeans for a crisp, uber cool look.

How to style the Pastel Simply Sartorial Ribbed limited edition range

LSC’s Lavender sock style looks great with lighter neutrals, such as a light grey suit and a white shirt – a nice look for a summer wedding. Or, for a more casual feel, try with white trainers, navy chinos or jeans and a white t-shirt. The brighter coral nicely complements darker tones. Need something that is front-row approved? Why not try the Skye Blue with a black suit, black loafers and a black turtleneck? Throw on a black leather jacket for extra cool points.
