London Sock Company: celebrating and supporting men’s health

London Sock Company was founded on the idea that pulling on a pair of socks in the morning can inspire confidence. As a company focused on the modern gentleman, our team is well aware of the realities when it comes to men’s physical and mental health. Therefore, this month, the men of London Sock Company are taking part in Movember, a charitable campaign where men grow moustaches to raise money for male-focused causes. The money goes towards tackling prostate and testicular cancer, increasing awareness about mental health issues and supporting organisations for suicide prevention. The concept of Movember started in Australia back in 2003 and has grown into a global community of supporters.

“Movember is a fun, effective way to raise money and awareness for men’s health,” says Max Yeoman, wholesale account manager at London Sock Company. “Numerous studies have shown that men don’t look after themselves, and often don’t go to the doctors when they should. I am raising money for testicular cancer, as it’s the most commonly diagnosed cancer in young men and it is a real concern amongst me and my peers.”

A huge focus of Movember is promoting an environment where men feel secure enough to discuss all areas of their health. “For me, it’s all about mental health awareness,” says Luke Dixon, technical architect. “Mental health is so important yet often overlooked or hidden away. By taking part, I’m hoping to prompt people to think more about their own mental health… and maybe give them a laugh at my terrible moustache.”

According to Movember, in the UK, men die three years younger than women, and each year more than 4,300 men commit suicide. For Jack Richards, campaigns, acquisitions and partnerships for London Sock Company, this is an issue that is vital to discuss. “All the issues that Movember highlights are really important, but for me, it’s mental health and male suicide in particular. It impacts everyone, and I personally know three guys who have taken their lives. It seems like something we can work together to prevent, so a little facial hair for a month in order to raise awareness is a no-brainer for me.”

International Men’s Day

November 19th is International Men’s Day, a campaign that shares many objectives with Movember, including a focus on men’s and boy’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models.

Even though it’s halfway through November, you can still take part in Movember in a number of ways. Looking for moustache inspiration? London Sock Company’s favourites are moustache aficionados (and actors) Nick Offerman and Hulk Hogan.
